First Ward residents with health concerns have a free opportunity to get checked out tomorrow at Calvary Baptist Church.
Boone Hospital Center will sponsor the Care Fair from 4 to 8 p.m. The church will host the annual barbecue and get-together for neighborhood residents, including live entertainment and activities for children.
"The main goal of this event is to improve the health of people and communities we serve," said Boone Hospital spokesman Lynn Hostetler. "It is the most effective way of reaching out to a large proportion of this population."
About 30 health-care professionals from Boone Hospital, the Columbia/Boone County Health Department, the Women, Infants & Children program and other local agencies will provide the neighborhood with the latest health information on various issues such as diabetes, nutrition, arthritis, urology, women’s heath, cancer, heart disease, mental health and infant feeding. Boone Hospital will provide free screenings for high blood pressure and glucose. The health department will provide tetanus vaccines for adults and other immunizations for children.
About 800 people are expected to attend the annual event, according to Renae Nicholes, community information coordinator for Boone Hospital. "It will have a positive impact on the community. People in the area will maintain a healthy style of life," she said.
"We have been organizing the barbecue for four to five years," said Les Cassil, a minister at Calvary Baptist Church.
Boone Hospital Center developed the Care Fair in 1998 in response to a request from First Ward councilwoman Almeta Crayton.
